Start dragging any file and Transmute slides a dock of fitting conversions in from the edge of your screen. HEIC to JPG, MOV to MP4, a video to GIF, a Word file to PDF. Everything happens on your Mac.
Free · macOS 14+ · Apple silicon & Intel · ~2 MB · How to open it the first time
Pick up a file in Finder, Mail, your browser’s downloads or anywhere else. A slim panel glides in from the right edge with only the recipes that make sense for what you’re holding.
Let go over a recipe and it runs. The result appears beside the original with “(converted)” in its name, and the dock tucks itself away. Prefer a calmer screen? Switch the dock off in Settings and use the main window instead.
→ PNG, Shrink to 1 MB, → GIF…Built only on Apple’s own frameworks: ImageIO, AVFoundation and the macOS text system. No uploads, no accounts, no watermarks.
Read JPG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, GIF, BMP, WebP and AVIF. Write JPG PNG HEIC TIFF GIF BMP. Resize, shrink to a file size, strip location and camera data, or combine into a PDF.
MOV ↔ MP4 (rewrapped without re-encoding when possible), 720p and 1080p compression, HEVC, animated GIFs with your frame rate and width, and soundtrack extraction.
Convert to M4A (AAC), WAV, AIFF or CAF from any audio your Mac can play, or straight from a video.
DOCX, RTF, HTML, TXT and ODT to each other, or laid out as a PDF at Letter or A4. PDF pages can be saved as PNG or JPG images.
Zip a single item or many at once into one archive, and expand zip files into a new folder beside them.
Drop dozens of files at once. Each gets its own row with live progress, the before and after size, and buttons to open or reveal the result.
A sidebar grouped into Images, Video, Audio, Documents and Archives. Pick a recipe and everything you drop goes through it.
Quality, longest side, target file size, GIF frame rate and width, PDF paper size and page resolution. Remembered between launches.
Need an image under 1 MB for a form? Transmute searches for the best quality that fits, and only scales down when quality alone isn’t enough.
A menu-bar icon shows recent results. ⌘O adds files, ⌘K clears finished items, ⇧⌘D toggles the dock.
Files never leave your Mac. Transmute only connects to the internet to check whether a new version is available.
Never. Results are saved next to the original with “(converted)” (or “(shrunk)”, “(resized)”, “(clean)”) added to the name. If that name is taken, Transmute adds a number.
No. Every conversion runs on your Mac using frameworks built into macOS.
Transmute can read WebP and AVIF images and convert them to other formats, but macOS doesn’t include encoders for writing them.
No. It notices drags from the system’s drag clipboard and mouse movement, without Accessibility or Screen Recording access. You can turn it off in Settings or from the menu bar.
Transmute keeps PDFs simple: turn images into a PDF, lay out documents as PDF, or save PDF pages as images. Merging, splitting and editing PDFs are outside its scope.
Transmute is distributed directly from this website. Here’s how to open it the first time.
Drag a file. Pick where it’s going. Done.
